Window is a new edition made of hand-drawn and collaged elements from Sam Keogh’s work in Conspiracies, The Unicorn Crosses a Stream Cartoon, which have been combined on Glasgow Print Studio’s large-format flatbed scanner.
The work’s central image is a highly rendered pencil drawing of an undulating circular form. The figure on the left who points a smartphone toward the viewer reveals the image to be a reflection, as a stylised golden hand either reaches out to investigate the anomaly, or has caused it with its touch.
The performance which accompanies The Unicorn Crosses a Stream Cartoon reveals the source of these elements: the hand is that of Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus, nominated by Walter Benjamin as an oracular witness to the catastrophic progress of history. And the undulating circular form is the smashed window of JP Morgan’s Glasgow headquarters, provisionally repaired by the application of a reflective plastic film. In the past two years, the bank’s windows have been targeted at least twice in direct actions against its investments in Elbit Systems. In response, the bank patched up the affected windows with large sheets of semi-reflective vinyl in an apparent attempt to camouflage the areas of damage. The mirrored plastic blisters and bubbles over one of these smashed holes to create a strange circular form, elected by Keogh as an indelible sign of resistance and a reminder of the fragility of capital's facade.
